It was a roller coaster ride for over 18,000 UB and Temple football fans in UB Stadium on Saturday, but the Buffalo Bulls who came out victorious in a spectacular 35-yard Hail Mary pass- with less than a second to spare.
What a way to start off the Mid-Atlantic Conference season.
After a game of alternating leads and some fantastic playing on both sides, the Temple Owls took the lead with 38 seconds left on the clock. But that was just enough time for the UB Bulls to rush the field and take the game back.
Quarterback Drew Willy's game-winning throw and wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt's equally impressive catch ended a final quarter that included three lead changes within the last three minutes.
"We practice this play every week," said Willy. "He made an amazing catch. I was just hoping that when he went down he held on to it and didn't let them rip it out of his hands. It was a once in a lifetime play and I'm glad I was a part of it."
This was also a personal best for Willy, who threw a career-high 348 yards in the game. He also completed a touchdown pass for the seventh straight game.
"It was just two great teams," said UB tight end Jesse Rack. "[Both teams] have made just huge strides and are getting better. We shot ourselves in the foot and they shot themselves in the foot. Times when we should have capitalized, they capitalized. And it just went back and forth."
For the past couple years, both teams have had some bleak seasons. But with Coaches Turner Gill (UB) and Al Golden (Temple) now at the helm, it's clear that we're in for a change.
As UB coach Turner Gill put it, "[This was a] great win for our program. Great win for our community. Great win for this university."
Next, the Bulls will head to the University of Missouri to face the Tigers on Saturday, September 20th. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
