This weekend will see the second annual Ganohsesgeh 5K "Run for the Longhouse" on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. The 5K Run was started last year and was a huge success with runners from this reservation, from town and from all over the state competing. Proceeds will be donated to the Longhouse Building Fund.
The event begins at 9 AM on Sunday, August 3 rd at the Tonawanda Indian Community Building on Bloomingdale Road. Registration fee is $15. Runners who have not already registered are encouraged to come early. The race will proceed down Shanks Road to Sandhill Road and cross over Bloomingdale at the church. It will go down Meadville Road to Councilhouse Road and end up at Logan Field where the Annual Field Days festivities will be held all afternoon.
Anyone interested in running (or walking) is welcome to do so. For further information contact Megan Logan (946-7837) or Connie Tahamont (698-9731).
There will be many other activities offered up throughout the day for the Annual Field Days at Logan Field. Field Days, as they are called, was started years ago as a means to raise money for Gaiwiio (the code of Handsome lake or the "good word".) Gaiwiio goes to every reservation...each one has a turn. During the visit, Gaiwiio is recited in that nation's language. The Gaiwiio is life instructions and talks about the sky world and the punishers house. Gaiwiio has a large following. Many people from all over different Iroquois territories follow the Gaiwiio on its travels to each reserve. When it's time to hold the Gaiwiio it is also the duty of the host reserve to feed and house all those visitors. Feeding hundreds of people can be very expensive and no Native meal is just a meal - it's a feast with a plethora of food for all. Thus, Field Days was started to help raise money for the longhouse to feed these visitors.
There will be the semi-finals and championship game of the "Old Stix" Masters lacrosse tournament, horseshoes, native and non native food, singing and dancing. There will be a pie baking and fry bread baking contest which is always fun and dancing competition for all ages.
Come on down and see what the Res has to offer! Make a day of it. There is lots to do and plenty of friendly faces.
