After dropping their previous three games and averaging about 62 points a game, the Buffalo Bulls men's basketball team erupted offensively during Saturday's O'Reilly ESPNU BracketBuster game against the Youngstown State Penguins. Buffalo posted its most points of the season in a non-overtime game to beat Youngstown State 95-82 at Alumni Arena on Saturday.
"We've been talking a lot after the last couple games about mind set," said Buffalo head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "We were trying to get out guys to start applying pressure to the opponents instead of absorbing it and hoping things go well."
The Bulls were paced by junior guard Andy Robinson who scored a team-high 26 points. Sophomore guards Calvin Betts and Byron Mulkey also finished the game in double-digit scoring, with Mulkey recording 18 points and Betts scoring 16 points.
"We scrimmaged yesterday, full court for five minutes and scored a ton of points," Witherspoon said. "We came out of that practice thinking we could score a lot of points."
Buffalo (9-17)raced out to a fast 7-0 lead during the first two and a half minutes of action. However, the Penguins (9-19)came back to take the lead at the 13:37 mark on a jumper by guard Byron Davis to make it 18-16.
The two teams exchanged the lead eight times in the first half with the final lead change coming on a layup by freshman forward Jawaan Alston to go up 31-10 with 5:26 to go in the first half. The Bulls would then take a 41-39 lead into halftime.
UB controlled most of the second half, never trailing through its entirety. About five minutes into the second stanza, Buffalo went on a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 12, capped off by a Robinson layup at the 13:37 mark. The Bulls expanded their lead to as much as 14 with just over five minutes to play on a three-point play by Betts.
"We didn't do a very good job defensively," said Youngstown State head coach Jerry Slocum. "I give (UB) credit. They moved the ball very well on us and played hard."
Junior forward Brian Addison led UB with nine rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes of play. Betts also recorded a team-high three steals.
Davis led Youngstown State with 29 points and seven rebounds, while guard Vance Cooksey recorded six assists and four steals.
The Bulls outshot the Penguins at the free throw line, nailing 90.3 percent of their shots from the charity line, a sharp contrast to Youngstown State's 56.5 percent.
"We have good free throw shooters on our team," Witherspoon said. "We just have to concentrate, believe and trust in that. (The free throws) certainly helped us get to 95."
Buffalo next plays at Akron on Saturday. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
