UB Women's Tennis Team Out To A Good Start
Contributed by: J.P. Mitri on 2/4/2008

The University at Buffalo women's tennis team decisively thumped the Niagara Purple Eagles without breaking a sweat. The Bulls won all of their matches in straight sets handing the Purple Eagles a 7-0 blow-out loss.

The Bulls and Purple Eagles are in two different conferences and are clearly teams that are playing at different levels. With this win, the Bulls improve to 1-0 in their overall standings, defending their home court at the Village Glen Tennis & Fitness Center in Williamsville, NY. According to Purple Eagles' head coach Paul Calkins, it's not all about the results at this stage of the season.

"It's not a question of outcome now, it's a question of the process and how well were doing and facing those challenges," said Calkins. "So that when we do get into the conference toward the end of the season, when it really counts, that's when you do have to stay focused for a good hour, hour and a half and hold that focus."

Perhaps UB's edge is in their international roster. Tennis fans witnessed three Serbians reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open last week in the men and women singles. UB has seven international students on their roster; five of them are from Eastern Europe. The Purple Eagles have a roster of only North Americans, but are still a competitive team in their conference.

"Historically we finish top two, top three in our conference and if these girls continue to work as hard as they're working and if they use what they are working on in practice, we should be there again, we should be in the top three or two. Then it comes down to who plays best on one or two days."

Buffalo's impressive win should not be a surprise to anyone considering they're picked to win the conference by the Mid-American Conference this season. Their strongest player, Andreea Novaceanu, is ranked 21 st in the current East Regional poll. And they've reached the MAC finals in their two previous seasons.

As the world has just witnessed an 18-0 NFL football team lose the Super Bowl; a game that they were heavily favored to win, head coach of the number one ranked Buffalo squad, Kathy Twist is not taking anything for granted.

"Coaches know that a thousand things can happen...injuries. We got to go out and work hard every day and improve on every match and we have to do that to win the MAC, because it's a tough conference," said Twist.

This victory is just the beginning for what should be an exciting Buffalo Bulls women's tennis season; they're coming off a disappointed loss to Western Michigan in last year's MAC finals. Western Michigan is ranked second this year, coming up one vote shy of first place. One thing is certain though, this will be a thrilling season to watch the Bulls try to claim the MAC title and head into the NCAA championship.
