Last week's airing of Wife Swap on ABC, left me shaking my head and wondering to what lengths people won't go to grab their 15 minutes. It also left me angry and extremely disappointed with the Williamsville School District.

Let me explain.

The January 2nd episode of Wife Swap featured a local couple and their seemingly spoiled-rotten-beauty-queen daughter. I say seemingly because it's obvious by the inept delivery of lines, the show was scripted. But scripted or not, it painted apicture of shallow, overindulgent parents and a daughter with a somewhat unfortunate set of personality traits, living a charmed and choreless life The parents bragged about doing their daughter's homework, and the daughter mused at the misfortune of girls not as beautiful as she. The pitiful thing is that, for once, I am not exaggerating.

In retrospect, the show did not produce a tidal wave of popularity for the daughter, however the ripple effect was swift and wide.

The family, in particular this young girl, have become the butt of jokes and ridicule sufficient to make your hair curl. While I question the wisdom of parent who would go along with a script that would make their daughter the object of scorn among her peers, Brittany Spears mother is all the proof we need that stardust can be just as blinding to a parent as it can to a child. The adage "Be careful what you ask for..." can safely be applied to this situation.

That being said, they are not the only losers here. Some very decent and hard-working Williamsville youth are now left to shake off the image of spoiled little rich kid (of less than average intelligence). Kids who's only lapse in judgment is taking 3 AP courses in one semester, volunteering to work at the CIty Mission, or emptying the litter box on a regular basis. Kids who do their own homework, and drive a 1991 Alero, with a dented fender. Kids who get presents on their birthday and Christmas, and a hug all year round.

I for one do not appreciate the transient intrusion of the "bizarro world" of Reality TV on our ordinary lives, and the residual white noise it's left behind.

I am particularly annoyed (and that's putting it mildly} with the "BOZO" who allowed a "Wife Swap" television crew into our High School to film parts of this episode. I have but one question for the idiot - err...person who put their John Hancock to this. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! Did you even bother to watch this show before you deemed it prudent to have school represented this way? Were you too enamored of bright lights and screen credits? Were you trying to put Williamsville East on the map? If so, good job! I for one preferred it when exemplary test scores, and John Stevens were Williamsville East's claim to fame.

I pay taxes to this school district, and I do not appreciate the trivial pursuit of fame and fortune being allowed in our school, and the end result making our school and our students look ridiculous.
