Equal rights: just an illusion!
Contributed by: novy chiari on 10/18/2007

All those rules in work places about how to address a woman, or an african-american person, or a heavy person to avoid ending up in a law suit. We really care about the other's sensibility and are raised since day one to respect everybody. We know in USA the law will protect everybody, especially the weak ones, right? WRONG! Try go to a middle class local school and talk to some divorced women...how many of them receive help, protection and respect from the people and the laws involved in their cases? Life after divorce is hard, we all know that, but the hardest part is that women fight against a hard cold wall of apathy and arrogance and there's nothing they can do. The law is filled of wonderful words in their favour, but in real life nobody will apply it. They know women still believe in fairytales and never stop telling us stories, let men keep the money and whatever else they are not willing to give.
I married really young a man 13 years older than me, left my country and was married 11 years, I loved my husband dearly and gave him two beautiful kids. I didn't have an easy life in WNY, because I missed the warm climate of my country, so I tried to convince Rick (my husband) to move souther, but it wasn't possible. Finally I became too sick to stay any longer and when I left I weighted 102lb(I'm 5,10 ft tall!) I needed to move back to Italy , I needed somebody to take care of me since my husband couldn't, obviously. Me and the kids moved, with my husband approval, and soon after I started to get better and gain weight and enthusiasm! I also realized Rick wasn't the man for me, he wasn't the one to make me happy and I hadn't made him happy either, so I asked for a separation. It's been two years now and Rick still refuses to divorce me, but I go on with my separation. In Italy the judge appointed him to a 800 euros child support which he has never paid. He lives in our house, drives my SUV, smokes cigars, plays golf, bets on sport, watches porn on the web...in Europe that's considered a pretty good life! I, on the other side of the globe, live with my mother, can't afford a car, so ride a train to go to 4 different works, pay 1600 euros just in bills and school and children, but for two years I have never stopped smiling...except for last week when I collapsed and at the emergency they had to reanimate me...I was out for 3 days and they told me it was exhaustion! Now I have to slow down, so i'll have to work less.
I called every office I could think of and guess what they said? Nobody can force Rick to pay, all I can do is just make his life harder...
Rick, I never thought you needed to be forced to support your children, I honestly thought you were the kind of man who would care to know they have everything they need and more! I obviously overestimated you and your love...
Truth is we do live in a man world, they can do whatever they want and we can only accept it or scream it out...but it takes another man to change it!
