Even if you've lived under a rock for the past 10 years you know about 'Sex and the City.'
Four beautiful women traipsing around New York City with their Jimmy Choos andManolo Blahniks, but what you might not know is that behind these four women there are some interesting tales.
A decade is a long time for any television series to be on, but to then top it off with a movie version of itself, even riskier. 'Sex' came out in 1998 on HBO, where racing sex scenes and throwing vulgarity around were the norm. So, take all that, add in 10 glorious years, four beautiful and hip women and offer them the chance to be on the big screen. It could either spell disaster or a new phenomenon.
Casting someone as well known as Sarah Jessica Parker to play the lead role is alone in itself the makings of a hit. Then pairing her with a mature sex kitten like Kim Cattrall, and sweet and innocent Kristin Davis, and almost unknown Cynthia Nixon and they almost got it. Add in throughout the years a few other people like Chris Noth also star of "Law and Order" to play Big, Evan Handler and hunky Jason Lewis and the male to female ratio is almost equivalent.
Taking into account the plot of the movie and putting it aside, two hours and twenty minutes is an awful long time for any movie, even one about shoes. If you've seen the show, don't really expect much more than an extension of that, with of course a few nice and unexpected surprises to peak some interest. One really must be a fan of the show to get a lot of the characters little quirks, but a true fan, no doubt will enjoy every minute down to the last narrative second.
With the exception of a mass of sexual innuendo jokes, brash unawareness of other characters feelings and the gratuitous, but somewhat hilarious and enjoying sex scenes, this movie might just be a hit after all.
There will of course be a lot of sad women out there knowing that their long-awaited movie version of 'Sex' has arrived, and has left no room for either a continuation of the show or a sequel. It's hard to imagine another two and half hours of shoes.
Movies like this, though, are a once in a lifetime opportunity and need to be caught at the moment.
So, let's all grab our cosmopolitans and drink to a job well done, even if it did take a decade.
