Going Green, Staying Green

Multiple organizations from around Buffalo took part in "Focus the Nation," a campaign held at Daemen Campus to inform residents on environmental awareness.

"This gives students the chance to understand global warming," said Cheryl Bird, executive director for the center for sustainable communities and civic engagement at Daemen College. Bird was also one of the main coordinators of the event.

The campaign was started by a professor in Seattle, WA and soon spread to around 1600 campuses throughout the U.S.

"For one day, all college campuses around the country have the opportunity to show their resources to better the environment," Bird said.

This one day is packed with speeches, presentations and film screenings all geared toward "going green."

On Thursday, the Wick Lobby at the Daemen Campus held many organizations including the Buffalo Niagara Builders Association. Their focus was to reduce energy consumption in people's home by assessing necessary changes in order to maintain low- energy consumption.

"For 100 dollars, we have one of our contractors come into your home and study where energy is most used," said Lori Beth Nagel, regional coordinator of energy smart communities. "We then give a report of where the most energy is used and suggestions as to how to reduce that consumption."

Nagel said that most homeowners need more insulation which results in saving up to 40 percent in energy costs.

Waste materials was also another important aspect to maintain a valuable environment. Buffalo ReUse devotes its time to reusing materials that are normally thrown away when a building or house is torn down.

"We take the leftover material, sort it, stack it and sell it," said Suzanne Toomey- Spinks, director of creativity, researching, evolution and application (C.R.E.A) Institute.

Buffalo ReUse does not only focus its efforts to reuse materials that would otherwise be thrown out, Toomey- Spinks said. It also decorates vacant houses that are normally targeted for graffiti.

Among these two organizations, other groups illustrated awareness of "environmentally- friendly" food and other products to purchase.

Massachusetts Avenue Project (M.A.P) and Ten Thousand Villages have a joint interest in not only what people eat but what they purchase. M.A.P educates those who have an interest in agriculture on how to grow crops that are diverse as well as good for the environment.

In addition, Ten Thousand Villages provides a place to sell these foods in addition to other products. Jewelry, paper and photo frames are some of the many things on display. They are all environmentally reused materials that have come from all over the world including Bangladesh and Thailand.

Although many of these organizations focus on different areas of improving the environment, many result in creating additional jobs in Western New York.

"We work with the community not only to educate," Toomey- Spinks said, "But also to give them jobs to deconstruct houses."

M.A.P also is on the same track with creating jobs not only for agriculture but other aspects like graphic- design and advertising.

Other important organizations at Thursday's event included Erie County Recycling, Buffalogreen Art and Good Going.

Geared toward alternate transportation options, Good Going urges residents to carpool when either going to work or other places and riding a bike when possible.

Although "Focus the Nation" has an important goal to better the environment, the result has composed another one: to enhance economic opportunity in Western New York.
