The Newstead Democratic Committee recognizes a young Democrat for involvement and interest in our party by presenting the John F. Kennedy Award at their annual Pig Roast. This year the recipient of the award is Michael Schilling.
Mike's interest in history developed in high school as result of some dedicated teaching by Mr. Drayer who made history seem real, and by Mr. Baumgarten who was always willing to talk current events with a high school kid. His history interest led easily into an interest in politics. He had many good influences along the way including his grandmother, Joanne Oakes who was for many years active on our committee.
His Mom, Cindy, was a student of 1960's politics with a great interest in John and Robert Kennedy. Her many books on the subject gave him lots of material for use in high school writings projects. After several trips to Boston with its rich history and to JFK Library, Mike began to have a real feeling for Democratic politics. Trips to see the Clintons and John Kerry on their trips to Buffalo made the whole thing more real.
Mike was a high school student when his Mom worked for Supervisor Don Holmes. He commented that he always enjoyed stopping in at the office. It gave him a clearer understanding of the workings of local government. Mike says "I learned a lot from Don about elections working on his campaigns and later while he was Chairman of the Newstead Democratic Committee."
Mike embraces the democratic principles and has actively encourages his friends to make themselves aware of what is going on politically around them. Always eager to talk to other young people about politics, he urges them to take full advantage of their right to vote.
We will honor Michael at the Pig Roast on August 25, 2007. The event is from 1:00 p.m. through 5:00 p.m. at the Cummings Lodge in Akron Falls Park. There will be plenty of food and door prizes. Plan to join us in recognizing another of Akron's fine young adults.
