Dr. Krieger's June Health Tip of the Month
Contributed by: Dr. Bill Krieger on 6/5/2008

If it's good for my business it's bad for your health. The word doctor means teacher, and it's a part of my job as your doctor to educate you about good health.

There was an interesting turn of events that occured after Chis, our past receptionist brought her infant son in for a Chiropractic first visit. Chris is now a first time mother, having adopted several months prior. Two weeks ago she asked me to examine him to make sure that he did not have any problems with his spine. During the case history she said that he was extremely fussy. Upon observation when mother brought baby to the office I noticed that he always had to be rocked or held or he would cry. She said that his days and nights were reversed. He would sleep when he should be awake.

The physical exam revealed a mild joint dysfunction of the first cervical vertabrae. I asked her if I should adjust the baby and she agreed. The adjustment for an infant is different than for an adult. It is much gentler because a baby's neck muscles and ligaments are not fully developed. The force used is about the same as pushing a thumb tack into a cork board. I performed the adjustment without incident. I did a post check to see if the normal joint function had returned, and it did. The baby seemed pleased.

Two weeks later Chris brought the baby back and she was ecstatic. She no longer had to hold the baby all of the time to keep him from crying. Her husband later told me that the longest the baby would sleep during the day was 15 minutes and then he wanted to be held again. He was always crying to the point that one of Chris' exotic birds started to scream every time the baby screamed. Chris said that over Memorial Day weekend she went to visit family in Rochester. While at the get together 20 members of her family asked if this was the same baby. The baby was now so content and happy.

It is more than likely the baby was suffering from colic. Originally colic was thought to be a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, but further research indicates that a baby may be suffering from musculoskeletal pain. In a study done in Denmark, the babies who were medicated decreased crying for one hour per day, while in the group receiving Chiropractic care decreased crying by 2.7 hours. The interesting findings involved 316 babies.

The study, authored by Jesper M. M. Wiberg, Jan Nordsteen, and Niels Nilsson, titled "The Short-term Effect of Spinal Manipulation in the Treatment of Infantile Colic: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial with a Blinded Observer", was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, October 1999, Volume 22, Number 8, pages 517-522. Needless to say, Chris and her husband are extraordinarily happy about this change. Chris said she wanted me to tell all the patients and everyone else about this wonderful experience, therefore I'm sharing the story with the readers of buffalo.com.

Hot Weather Tips
Remember as the temperature and humidity climb, it's so important to drink plenty of fluids. In addition, alcohol and caffiene both act as diuretics thereby reducing your fluid levels in your body. Be aware that the UV from the Sun can damage the skin. Either you should cover up or wear adequate sunscreen.
