Dr. Krieger's Health Tip of the Month

If it's good for my business, it's bad for your health. The word doctor means teacher and it is a part of my job as your doctor to educate you about good health. This is part 2 of the tip of the month on which vitamins are depleted by prescription drugs. This is excerpted from a journal article by Dr. James Meschino in the January 29, 2008 issue of Dynamic Chiropractic entitled "Drugs that Deplete Nutrients". The article describes thirteen different drug categories and the vitamins and minerals depleted by their use.

Oral Contraceptives and Estrogen replacement therapy can cause the depletion of Beta-carotene, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12 and C, Folic Acid, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Magnesium and Zinc.

Sedatives and Barbiturates are can cause the depletion Vitamins B2 and B12, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamins C & D.

Anti-Depressants may be associated with the depletion of Vitamins B2 & B6, Calcium, Magnesium and Coenzyme Q10

Digoxin(digitalis), Indomethacin, Amphetamine and Amphetamine containing drugs can cause the depletion of Vitamin B1.

Levadopa used for Parkinson's disease the depletion of , Vitamins B6.

Anti-convulsant medications causes the depletion of Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Biotin and Zinc.

Diuretic drugs can cause the depletion of Vitamin B1, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium and Zinc.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor drugs used for the treatment of high blood pressure may deplete zinc.

Beta Blockers are associated with the depletion of coenzyme Q10.

The nutrients are depleted either when the body has to detoxify the medication, or when the medication uses the nutrients up while causing the therapeutic effect in the body. Sometimes the medication can change the absorption of the nutrient into the body. If you feel that you are suffering side effects from a medication consult with your healthcare provider. They may be able to recommend that you start taking additional vitamins to protect your body from the medications you are taking. As a chiropractor I have seen patients on Statin drugs suffer from muscle weakness and pain. These patients may have been helped if they took the appropriate vitamins and minerals.

I wish to share with the communitytwogood new stories that happened during the final week of March 2008. The first is that after many years of trying my office manager Chris has adopted her first child David. She will be leaving us and I wish her, her husband Pete and David all the best. The pictures of Chris with her one week old child convey complete joy and happiness. Chris has one of those smiles, the one that you know means happiness.

The second story is about the hockey team my son plays on. He plays for the Buffalo Stars Junior C hockey team. The weekend before Easter they needed to finish second or better to have an opportunity to advance to the USA Hockey Junior Nationals in Boston. They finished in second at their league championships gaining the eighth and final seed. A team from Massachussets named the Mass Maple Leafs befriended them at the league championships, both teams would advance to Nationals. At the nationals the Maple Leafs even shared their practice ice with them. The teams were in 2 different brackets and would only see each other in the semi finals or the finals. On the third day of Nationals the Stars needed a victory to advance to the medal round. The Mass Maple Leafs knew they might meet the Stars if they won against the PittsburghJunior Penguins. The Maple Leafs showed up for the game and cheered them on to victory. The Maple Leafs even formed a tunnel from the locker room to the ice before the game.As chance would have it they met in the semi-finals with the Mass Maple Leafs easily defeating the Stars team. The Stars would finish in third place. The best part of the story is what happened afterwards. After the handshake following the game, the Maple Leafs coach asked if he could help present the third place medals to the Stars players, but the best was yet to come. The Mass Maple Leafs team remained on the ice and cheered each player as they recieved their medals. Then both teams intermingled with each other and posed to take a picture with all the players and coaches from both teams. This is what good sportsmanship is all about. The Mass Maple Leafs went on to win the Junior C Naitonal Championship. I think both teams won and experienced something they should never forget.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I'M INJURED AT WORK OR IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT?

If you are injured at work and you are physically able, contact your supervisor and inform them of your accident. They will provide you with the necessary paperwork to document your injury. It is very important to explain your accident in as much detail as possible. If you are injured in an auto accident you have 30 days in NY State to notify your insurance company. It is also important to be evaluated by your health care professional as soon as possible following a work related or auto accident. This will help minimize any long-term effects of your accident.

If you or someone you know is involved in an accident, listed below are some of the symptoms that may be experienced.

neck pain
