Dr. Krieger's Health Tip of the Month

If it's good for my business it is bad for your health. The word doctor means teacher and it is a part of my job as your doctor to educate you about good health. I came across a journal article by Dr. James Meschino ( http://www.chiroweb.com/columnist/meschino)that contained important information that I thought every person needs to know. I am excerpting this information from an article that appeared in the January 29, 2008 issue of Dynamic Chiropractic entitled "Drugs that Deplete Nutrients". The article describes 15 different categories of drugs and the vitamins and minerals depleted by their use. Due to the length of the list I will divide the list in half continuing this tip in April.

Laxatives cause the depletion of Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Calcium.

Antibiotics cause the depletion of Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Potassium, Magnesium and Zinc.

Cholesterol lowering drugs such as Choestyramine, Colestipol, Questran, Colestid, Artomid-S and Statin Drugs like Lipitor cause the depletion of Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Beta-Carotene, Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Iron and Coenzyme Q10.

Colchicine a gout medication causes the depletion of Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid and Iron.

Prednisone and related steroid drugs causes the depletion of Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin C and Calcium.

NSAIDS such as aspirin, ibuprofen and advil causes the depletion of Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and Iron.

Antacid drugs cause the depletion of Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Chromium and Iron.

The nutrients are depleted either when the body has to detoxify the medication or when the medication uses the nutrients up to cause the therapeutic effect in the body. Sometimes the medication can change the absorption of the nutrient into the body. A recent study showed that a lack of Vitamin D can causes depression. Imagine if you are taking a laxative which causes your body to have a depletion of vitamin D, could this be the reason you are depressed. Maybe on top of that you don't like dairy products or get much sunshine(the skin produces vitamin D when you are exposed to sun), 2 ways in which your body acquires vitamin D. The lack of vitamin D production in the winter due to lack of sun may be apart of the puzzle called Seasonal Affective Disorder or the mid winter blues. What happens if you are taking 2 different medications that deplete vitamin D?It sounds like this is good time to take a good multivitamin. Remember Vitamin A, Vitamin D and Vitamin E are all fat soluble so you should not take beyond the Recommended Daily Allowance listed on the bottle, the vitamins taken in excess can become toxic to your system. Vitamin C can cause patients who have kidney stone problems to form more kidney stones. Consult your health care provider to if you feel uncomfortable in self administering the additional vitamins you need.
