Kids learn how rough daddy had it
Contributed by: Andrew Galarneau on 4/24/2007

After theOctober Surprise storm, when everyone else was trying to cope with the lack of electricity, my kids were outside with me, taking a little history lesson.

We spent the better part of the day dragging branches out of the back yard, and next to the curb. When you have a 10-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, and a 5-year-old boy, you are going to have some work stoppage issues.

The snow had helpfully melted, meaning every step was like wading in fudge. I encouraged them, telling stories from my childhood in Genesee County. Most of the stories involved carrying heavy rocks, timbers, splitting firewood, and shoveling snow that came in drifts higher than my head.

We were taking a water break when my eldest asked the question.

"Dad, are you trying to make us understand what it was like for you as a kid?"

Yes, I told her. Except that when we dragged branches through the mud, it was uphill ... both ways.

She laughed. Back to work.
