Last year, I walked into my parents' house and found my dad playing music with his piano tuner friend. As I walked past them, I recognized the song and sang a few lines. Then I disappeared into another room and that was that.
Later on that day, my dad asked me to sing some more, and it sounded pretty good. His other band was supposed to play an area senior home in a few weeks but one of the musicians couldn't make it. Dad suggested I sing for the seniors. As a trio, we practiced some songs, and sure enough, a few weeks later, we had our first gig.
One gig turned into dozens more, as our band, named Uptown, started to connect with audiences at area senior homes. With classic songs like "Fly Me To The Moon," "Dream A Little Dream Of Me," and "That's All," our sound, blending the vibraphone, piano, and my voice, really caught on with people over 60, of which there are plenty in Western New York.
Oftentimes people complain there are no good jobs in Western New York. Well, I am just over 30-years-old, and I have found a unique job where I sing songs from the 1920s-1960s for little old ladies in their 80s and 90s, so it is possible to have a good job here in Erie and Niagara Counties.
The best part about being in Uptown is getting a chance to sing with my dad. Together we will perform "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" or "Manana," and the crowd loves it. I find being in the band is a great bonding experience, and we also get the opportunity to shine a little light into the lives of seniors, filling their day with pleasant melodies and memories.
If you might like to book Uptown, please email primopr716@juno.com.
