Joe Satriani let his guitar do the Preachin’
Contributed by: Buffalo.com/YourHub Brian Wright on 10/13/2008

Joe Satriani didn't need to sing a single word to his audience Saturday night. Instead, he let his guitar speak for him.

In front of a packed house at the University at Buffalo's Center for the Arts, Joe Satriani, No. 8 in Guitar Player Magazine's "Top 50 Greatest Guitarists," strummed and riffed late into the night. Instead of singing, his mouth silently mimicked the sounds of his guitar. Each ear piercing high note was paired out with a high and tight open mouthed smile, as if he was screaming. The lower notes got their own "O" face. Words were completely unnecessary as Satriani spread his message of rock through the notes.

"This is like going to church for serious guitarists," said David Wedekindt the CFA's Director of Marketing "People come here and just try watch and learn what he does. Guys like Joe and Steve Via are guitar gods to these fans.

To many in the audience, the show was like a religious experience. While Satriani worked miracles on stage with his guitar, his fingers running and hurdling down the neck, the audience became entranced in the music. From fans simply banging their heads and tapping their sneakers to the beat of the bass, to those who were more enthused and began to dance with full body movements while still sitting, it was clear that Satriani's music struck everyone.

For the most part the show consisted of mostly rock songs off of his latest CD, Surfing With The Alien. That was not the only genre on the menu for the night though as plenty of blues and Techno-driven songs also found their way into the mix. Fans were treated to a spectacular encore performance, when Satriani and his band were joined on stage by Leslie West, who opened the show with his band, Mountain.

Instrumental performers, especially guitarists, are becoming quite the regulars at the CFA. For the past couple of years, the CFA has brought in national instrumental acts and each time the show is considered a huge success. Many artists, such as Derek Trucks as well as Satriani, are also known to come back and play at the CFA again and again.

"Instrumental artists always do great here," said Wedekindt. "Part of it is the venue. The acoustics are great and so are the sight lines. Also, these artists don't play packed stadiums anymore so this is perfect for them."

The Derek Trucks Band will be performing at the CFA on Nov. 2, so guitar fans won't have to wait too long to see another miracle worker.
