This past Saturday, the award winning Buffalo's Gateway Show Chorus performed to a nearly sold out crowd in celebration of their favorite city, Buffalo, at the Depew High School auditorium. They sang songs that reminded the audience why being from this city is so special. This is the same theme that they are going to rely on at their upcoming national competition this November in Hawaii.
"If we make the top ten in Hawaii then we will compete with a 15 minute package. That will include us singing about longing for our Buffalo home even while in Paradise," said Shelly Heuer, a member of the chorus.
The choir is special in the sense that the 87 participants range in age from 16 years old to 89 years old. Even though their ages differ, their unity on the stage is magical. Part of their charm is that they sing entirely a cappella and as well as dance along with their music.
Ryan Smith, an audience member from Amherst said, "I've never heard an a cappella choir sound so good. I am impressed by how a wide range of voices can be mixed together to create a harmony, all while dancing at the same time."
It wasn't just the music that held the audiences attention though, there was also a local comedian, E Ann Palmer, which brought out the funny side of the evening.
"She was so great, our own Lucille Ball!" stated Douglas Shaw of Cheektowaga.
All the humor and the music was ultimately tied back to the unique Buffalo culture. The show was properly titled, "On a Wing and a Sing, A Musical Tribute to Buffalo... Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." This theme will hopefully impress the judges as the Buffalo Gateway Show Chorus represents our city later on this year in Hawaii.
