Juliet Dagger Kicks off Local Music Showcase
Contributed by: Buffalo.com/YourHub Lizz Schumer on 5/24/2008

While many mourn the loss of local music stores and the advent of the superstore distributor, Barnes and Noble has partnered with Good Charamel artists to make the most of a changing media atmosphere.

"In this day and age we all have to come together: music, art, literature. It's kinda weird that it's all being sold in one place now, but we've got to find a formula that works. And this is it," said Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls, founder of Good Charamel.

To kick off its initiative to bring attention to local artists, Juliet Dagger performed Friday May 23rd at Barnes and Noble in Clarence, the first in the four-part Good Charamel Records Spring Local Music Showcase.

"We've formed a partnership with Good Charamel to show that we're really trying to support local artists, we're not just some corporate superstore," said Chuck Schwartz, music director for Barnes and Noble. "This contract with Good Charamel shows that we're working in the community and drawing business for new artists."

Barnes and Noble is the only distributor of Good Charamel artists, and are broadcasting their sound nationwide via Red Dot, an in-store listening system.

"Anyone can tune in and hear their stuff," Schwartz explained. "Who knows, maybe some producer in Nashville will hear them and make a call. It's all about getting them heard."

Juliet Dagger's Erin Roberts on guitar and lead vocals and Leisha Gray on bass got themselves heard during a bare-bones acoustic set to a gathering crowd on Friday at 7pm, even though most of their songs do not translate well unplugged.

"It's hard because so much of our stuff is so electric," said Roberts with a laugh. "I think a lot of people who just showed up tonight and go check out our CDs are going to be very surprised when they hear how hard it is."

Nevertheless, Roberts and Gray put on an electrifying show with nothing but a pair of instruments, two microphones, and a speaker. The half hour set was small and intimate, with just a few rows of chairs inside the audio section of the bookstore. Hearing the heart-pounding, wailing, soulful punk rock in a brightly-lit bookstore before dark was vastly different than the usual darkened club atmosphere.

Two of their followers, Kari Vancroft and Mike Braaten commented on how different they sounded unplugged. "I think it sounded really good acoustic, but it's definitely different," said Vancroft. "I hope they try more acoustic stuff in their other shows, because it actually worked surprisingly well," Braaten agreed.

"If they can hang, that's chill," said Roberts of the new audience garnered by their acoustic debut. "If not, that's cool too. It's a different sort of thing."

Takac and Schultz agree that this new mode of presentation is a win-win situation for local artists and media distributors alike. "We're all working together here," said Takac. "These artists are trying to get themselves heard and we're trying to figure out how to make things work in this new age. This showcase is a great start."

The Good Charamel Records Spring Local Music Showcase continues next Friday, May 30 with Agent Me, followed by Last Conservative and Terry Sullivan in subsequent weeks. More information can be found on Juliet Dagger on their myspace page or about the festival at www.goodcharamel.com.
