Aca..WHAT?!
Contributed by: Michael Jankowski on 4/28/2008

A Cappella... or according to Dictionary.com a cappella is: 'without instrument accompaniment; in the style of church or chapel music.

Well, for most of you, that sounds pretty boring.. but WAIT! I'm not here to talk to you about your Sunday church hymns! No, I'm here to tell you about Collegiate A Cappella.

Well, what is collegiate a cappella you ask? We already know it has to be without any instruments, but what you may not know is that collegiate a cappella is based on modern music, that is, of the pop variety. You guessed it! Billy Joel, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, and even Styx songs are the focus of this extremely popular and growing style of music. Collegiate A Cappella is popular at universities across the United States and Canada, in fact its the child of contemporary a cappella, just think of a barbershop quartet, but with 7 or 8 members recreating the entire instrument, bass, and vocal lines to 'Back in Black' by ACDC. Yea, if it sounds cool, trust me, it is.

If Buffalo is the mecca of Chicken Wings, then think of Boston being the crazy center of the a cappella scene. Thousands of groups, both collegiate and professional, perform daily for events ranging from birthday parties to 5000+ attended concerts.

Now don't feel left out! There are TONS of local groups in the Buffalo area who sing all forms of a cappella music. But if you want the modern, 'hit you and wont look back' style, check out groups like The Lake Effect, and The Buffalo Chips. Other thank having extremely creative and somewhat satirical names, they have been tearing up the stage in locals concerts for as long as 15 years.

So where have you been? Check them out! In fact, the Buffalo Chips are SUNY Buffalo's only male a cappella group AND they have a concert coming up on Saturday, May 3rd! The concert will be featuring music from John Legend, Muse, Justin Timberlake, Beatles/Across the Universe, Toto, The Fray, Looking Glass, Moxy Fruvous, John Mayer, Foreigner, James Morison, One Republic, The Butterfly Effect, Queen, Rob Thomas and more. Tickets are $5 and if you would like more information you can contact them at business@thebuffalochips.com or just visit their website at http://www.thebuffalochips.com where you can check out live concert footage, and listen to samples from their eight albums releases.

The Chips have performed for state dignitaries as well as the Buffalo Sabres. But don't take my word for it, come to the concert on May 3rd and you'll understand what UB's a cappella sensation is all about!
