Dr.Joe Kincheloe and Dr. Shirley Steinberg, professors at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, willhighlight Niagara University's fifth annual Media Awareness Day April 19 at 7 p.m. in Dunleavy Hall, Room 127. The event is free and open to the public. The title of Kincheloe and Steinberg's presentation is "Christotainment: How the Media Sells Jesus."
Kincheloe is the Canada research chair in the department of education, while Steinberg is an associate professor of education. They specialize in media literacy, critical pedagogy, multiculturalism, and cultural studies. They have co-authored the book "Kinderculture: the Corporate Construction of Childhood."
Media Awareness Day will also feature a presentation by Dr. Ashley Fogle, assistant professor of communication studies at Niagara University. She will discuss political entertainment and youth political engagement from 3 to 4:00 p.m. in St. Vincent's Hall, Room 406.
A third event held on Media Awareness Day will be an exhibition of student work, as well as the presentation of awards for a student video contest. Communication studies students from Niagara University will showcase research and creative work in the Dunleavy Hall lobby beginning at 6 p.m. Video productions from local high school and university students will also be presented in Dunleavy Hall, Room 127, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Students will be competing for monetary prizes for media literacy video public-service announcements, which they have produced.
Media Awareness Day is sponsored by Niagara University's communication studies department and the Omicron Iota Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communications Honor Society.
