-The Gospel Music Channel (GMC) has announced an agreement with Black Family Channel (BFC) and a number of cable operators, in which BFC has ceased broadcasting as a linear cable television network and GMC is now distributed in the majority of markets in its place. The Black Family Channel has strongly endorsed the launch of GMC by systems carrying BFC. GMC adds nearly 275 systems from Bright House Networks, Charter Communications, Comcast Digital Cable, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable. Gospel Music Channel is now available on: Bright House Networks systems in Tampa and Bakersfield; Charter in St. Louis; Comcast Digital Cable in markets including Philadelphia, Miami, Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Denver, Houston, Pittsburgh and Sacramento; Cox systems in Hampton Roads and Roanoke, Va., and Omaha; and Time Warner Cable systems in New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Kansas City, San Diego, Northeast and Southwest Ohio, Charlotte, Raleigh and others. The new launches drive Gospel Music Channel into all ten of the top ten markets (DMAs) and 23 of the top 25. The channel expects to finish the year with more than 20 million subscribers. Willie Gary, BFC Founder and Chairman, commented, "The mission of Black Family Channel was to entertain, inform and empower communities with family programming that was original, authentic and relevant. We have concluded that the best way for us to accomplish that mission via television is to support Gospel Music Channel. Gospel Music Channel embodies BFCs values, but does so on a broader, multi-cultural scale. GMC presents the greatest opportunity for us to advance our goals of serving the family in the multi-cultural community. We strongly endorse these launches of GMC and encourage our community of black leadership, colleges and churches to support Gospel Music Channel and the cable companies that carry it." In making the announcement, Charles Humbard, GMC founder and president said, "We are thrilled with the endorsement from BFC and the cable industry. With Gospel Music Channel in so many new markets, millions of new subscribers can now enjoy our inspirational family-friendly music entertainment." GMC vice chairman Brad Siegel added, "Gospel Music Channel is honored to receive the support of Black Family Channel and proud to carry on the mission that BFC so ably accomplished. The two networks have shared the common goal of serving the family audience through programming that empowers, uplifts, and inspires, and we will continue to serve that family audience."

newsboys: remixed
in 2002, and on the heels of their latest hit record
GO
, comes a new remix album,
Go | Remixed
, in stores May 8. "I have always loved remix CDs," says singer Peter Furler. "They're like one of those TV makeover shows: you give the words and melody a new jacket and shoes, the rhythm a nip n' tuck, and send it out on the dance floor." Including radio hits "Wherever We Go," and "Something Beautiful," the songs on
Go | Remixed
are the imaginative work of producers Tedd T. (MuteMath, newsboys, tobymac, Rebecca St. James, Stacie Orrico, ZOEgirl), Max Hsu (Superchick, tobymac, VeggieTales, ThumpMonks), Lee Bridges (India.Arie) and Jeff Frankenstein of newsboys. The overwhelming response to this spring's 2007 "GO" tour recently led newsboys to extend concert dates into the fall, bringing along tour mates Kutless and introducing new Inpop act newworldson. The spring leg sold more than 120,000 tickets. With five gold albums, sales exceeding six million units, more than 20 No.1 radio hits, and a mantle of Dove Awards as well as Grammy nominations, newsboys has achieved phenomenal success in its near two decades together. Known for its amazing live performances and groundbreaking tours, the band continues to sell out festivals and concerts worldwide, satisfying diehard fans and winning new ones in the process. Most recently, newsboys released its fourteenth record,

, to critical and commercial success. Produced by Peter Furler and Tedd T, the project debuted at No. 51 on the
Billboard
Top 200 chart. Founded in 1999 by newsboys frontman Peter Furler, artist manager Wes Campbell and Inpop President Dale Bray, Inpop Records is home to a variety of artists including newsboys, Superchick, Tree63, Shane & Shane and Mat Kearney, among others. For more information, visit

CCM Magazine
, Christian music's preeminent publication, is changing its definition of "Christian music" with its May 2007 issue to raise the profile of independent and general market artists of faith. "This month marks a historic step for our magazine, and, as a result, the fans and the industry we serve," said
CCM
Editor Jay Swartzendruber. "We're going to start mixing indie and general market Christians such as The Fray, Mary J. Blige and Sufjan Stevens in with artists with traditional Christian label affiliation. Rather than define 'Christian music' just by its label or distribution, we're now defining it as
Christian worldview music
.
CCM Magazine
has always taken its role as a leader seriously, and we believe this is the way of the future." During the '70s
, CCM
played a leading role in branding the spiritual pop and rock & roll that was known then simply as "Jesus Music." As the grassroots contemporary Christian music scene mushroomed into a billion dollar industry, "Christian music" became widely regarded as an actual genre, even though it included rock, pop, hip-hop, punk, hardcore metal and other styles of music. As a result, many artists of faith who are reluctant to have their music defined by the Christian market have chosen to bypass it altogether. With this expanded view of "Christian music,"
CCM Magazine
now celebrates the full spectrum of faith-fueled music and musicians. The "CCM" acronym - which has stood for "contemporary Christian music" for most of the magazine's 29 year history - takes on new meaning this month as revealed by the front cover tagline:
Christ € Community € Music
. "
CCM
has always been a catalyst for community between Christian artists and readers," explained Swartzendruber. "However, we're taking that idea to a new level by making reader-generated content central to our new approach. In fact, our readers are literally helping us create this magazine, including their own album reviews, first-hand accounts, questions for favorite artists, and highlights from our online social networking community,
www.myCCM.org
. During the month of May, fans are invited to access a complimentary digital version of the new
CCM
by going to
www.CCMmagazine.com/promo
. Monthly subscriptions to
CCM
are available at www.CCMmagazine.com ($21.95) and include two free compilation CDs for new and renewing subscribers featuring music from artists such as Anberlin, Aaron Shust, The Almost and Building 429, among others.
-In response to the recently proposed Hate Crimes Bill (H.R. 1592) currently before Congress, singer/songwriter/author and former homosexual Dennis Jernigan fears his right to openly talk about how he was able to overcome homosexuality would be compromised since H.R. 1592 seeks to prosecute criminals based on their thoughts. "I was able to come to a level of freedom the homosexual community never told me was possible," says Jernigan. "Yet, through faith in God, I successfully walked out of that way of thinking and have met thousands of other men and women who have done the same. What about our civil liberties? To pass such a bill as H.R. 1592 is to invoke fear that I could be prosecuted for my religious beliefs and speech." Jernigan goes on to say that he fears for his nine children and their families in the days ahead should such legislation pass. "To lose one of our most basic rights, that of free speech, is to strip away what it means to be an American. Homosexuals already enjoy the same rights as all other Americans when it concerns the punishment of criminal acts against them. This legislation seeks to bestow special treatment upon a very small portion of our society. If this bill passes, Congress is telling me that I and countless others who have discovered they don't have to be homosexual are of less value now than when we were living as homosexuals. This couldn't be further from the truth. Every American is of equal value and should be treated with the same dignity and justice under the law." Dennis Jernigan is a husband and father who has been out of the homosexual lifestyle for over 25 years. His new CD entitled
I CRY HOLY
will be released nationwide in mid-July. In a music career that extends over two decades, Jernigan has amassed dozens of hit songs to his credit, recorded over 30 projects, and writtenfive books. His songs have been used in churches of every denomination across the globe, and consistently rank in the top 100 of CCLI's Most Performed Songs List. His song "Sit With Me A While" is a featured selection at the grave of President Ronald Reagan. He travels around the world telling his story of freedom from homosexuality.
-Platinum-selling recording artist Mark Schultz is bicycling across America to raise money for orphans and widows. His 3,500-mile ride will pass through the Buffalo area, where he will present a concert on Friday, June 29, at 7pm. The concert, presented in conjunction with Family Life Network and Kingdom Bound Ministries, will take place at the Wesleyan Church of Hamburg, 4999 McKinley Pkwy., in Hamburg, New York. Tickets are $15 general admission, $20 artist circle, or $20 at the door. All proceeds will go to The James Fund to help orphans and widows. Tickets go on sale starting today, May 1, at itickets.com, the Kingdom Bound office (8550 Sheridan Dr., Williamsville, NY), or by calling Kingdom Bound at 716-633-1117.
Schultz's inspiration to make this 3,500-mile trek came from a visit he and his wife, Kate, made to orphanages in Mexico. In the spring of 2006, they went on a mission trip with The James Fund, a non-profit organization founded by Family Christian Stores to meet the needs of orphans and widows in distress. Schultz's own adoption drew him to explore this ministry. Seeing firsthand the harsh realities for many orphans and realizing that he could have easily been one of the boys in the orphanage, he wanted to make a difference. "I went to visit some orphanages last spring and hang out with the kids, and I thought, how can I raise money for these kids?" says Schultz. "It seemed like nobody in the music business had ever done a tour where they rode their bike across the country and did concerts. I thought, that sounds impossible, let's do that!" Buffalo-area fans, familiar with Schultz's songs like "He's My Son," featured on "Delilah After Dark" on 96.1 WJYE, or "You Are A Child Of Mine," featured on Family Life Network's 88.3 WCOU, can support the cause by signing up to sponsor Schultz's bike ride at markacrossamerica.org. The website will track Schultz's progress on the tour, list concerts/special events, feature a photo gallery, and more.
Schultz's area concert is being presented by Kingdom Bound Ministries, best known for presenting an annual Christian music festival at Darien Lake Theme Park Resort, halfway between Buffalo and Rochester, New York, for more than two decades. Now in its 21st year with 65,000 people in attendance over the course of four days, Kingdom Bound 2007 will bring together some of today's most popular Christian pop, rock, and modern worship artists, including Casting Crowns, TobyMac, Newsboys, Chris Tomlin, and David Crowder, among many others, for this summer's festival, to be held August 5-8, 2007, at Darien Lake Theme Park Resort in Darien Center, New York. Kingdom Bound 2007 will be a diverse music festival, featuring praise and worship, hip-hop, blues, big band, pop, rock and other styles of music. Event or day pass tickets, along with campsite/RV/hotel packages, are currently available. For tickets and accommodation information, call 800-461-4485, and to see

Jonathan Butler
has led a life few could imagine. Born under the shadow of South African apartheid and raised in poverty, Butler, while still in his teens, became the first non-white artist to be played on white mainstream radio and appear on national television. Nelson Mandela credits Butler's music as having inspired him during his long days of imprisonment. With three decades of international acclaim under his belt, Butler is a testament to believing in one's self and refusing to let circumstance decide fate. Now with the release of
Brand New Day
, Butler focuses his talent and voice on the world of gospel music. Born the youngest of twelve children, Butler's childhood home was a cardboard and corrugated-metal shack in one of the most impoverished townships of Cape Town. Music was an integral part of the Butler family life, giving them creative and emotional release, as well as adding to their meager income through their musical performances. While barely more than a toddler, Jonathan was presented with a homemade, one-string guitar. Little did his father realize, in that moment, he was changing the direction of his son's life. Years later, around the age of seven, Jonathan, while sitting round a campfire listening to his family sing, suddenly joined in. His previously unheard voice, clear and melodic, delighted and astonished the Butler family. Jonathan's musical gifts, encouraged by his parents, grew by leaps and bounds. In his early teens, Butler won a local talent contest, affording him the opportunity to perform with a touring musical company throughout South Africa, playing in ramshackle roadhouses to black audiences as well as concert halls reserved solely for whites. When Jonathan was thirteen, Clive Caulder, the then president of London-based Jive Records, heard him perform. Soon after, Caulder signed the young singer-musician. Butler immediately began an intensive study of English (his first language is Afrikaans). A year later, the label released Jonathan's debut, self-titled album, which was an instant success, later going Gold. The album also introduced him internationally and he scored his first Grammy nomination for the pop hit "Lies." An instrumental, "Going Home," earned him another Grammy nomination and the mid-tempo ballad, "Sarah, Sarah," confirmed Butler's place in popular music. While Butler was an admirer of South African stars like singer Miriam Makeba, he was also greatly influenced and inspired by American soul and jazz artists, including Stevie Wonder and George Benson. Because of Butler's enormous success in the jazz world, he is often referred to as a jazz artist, which isn't really the case, since his laid-back approach to R&B/pop has earned him a lot of supporters in the urban contemporary, adult contemporary, quiet storm as well as smooth jazz/NAC markets. A stream of diverse albums followed one after the other. Through them and extensive concert tours, Butler solidified his presence in the 1990s with a body of music that crossed color and age lines. Jonathan also moved to England, with his wife, Barenese, and their children. Says Jonathan, "I came to the West seeking artistic and personal freedom. While my albums have always offered vocal cuts and instrumentals, for me it was never about creating music for a particular format or type of audience. That's too narrow and restrictive. For me, it's about surrendering to the will of the music and just letting it flow through me, whichever direction it may go." The Butlers' time in England lasted 17 years before Jonathan realized a complete change was needed, both in physical environment as well as creative climate. In 1996, the family moved to Los Angeles. Reinvigorated creatively and spiritually, Jonathan quickly found himself writing some of the most inspired songs of his already formidable career. Butler's entrance into Gospel music began with a worship tune, his mega-hit with Kirk Whalum, "Falling In Love With Jesus." His first all-Gospel project and Maranatha! Music debut,
The Worship Project
, continued where "Falling in Love" left off and allowed the artist to spread his wings on a series of beautifully penned and highly reflective tunes. He was also featured in the critically-acclaimed Gospel Goes Classical project, recorded live with Juanita Bynum, backed by a 75-piece orchestra and a 100-voice choir. The Billboard-charting CD, with renowned arranger/conductor, Dr. Henry Panion, III, at the helm, allowed Butler to revisit "Falling in Love" and to duet with Bynum on the worshipful "I Don't Mind Waiting." Now Butler will release his second Maranatha! Music project,
Brand New Day
, a collection of uplifting and empowering Gospel songs. Co-produced with Luther "Mano" Hanes (CeCe Winans, Andrae Crouch, Israel Houghton), the CD brings a new sound to Jonathan Butler, yet never veers too far away from the classic styling he's best known for. The title tune "Brand New Day" is an invigorating, exciting jewel. The rock-edginess of "Gonna Lift You Up" helps to celebrate the comfort and joy of his faith. Co-written with Israel Houghton (Israel & New Breed), the track is accented by a memorable chorus and a lavish feast of driving instruments. "You Are My Everything" contains beautiful guitar work and sweet, solemn vocals. Butler shines on the reflective and emotive "Mercy." Performed with his daughter Jodie, the lyrics speak tenderly of one of God's most notable characteristics. The artist's love affair with the guitar shines through on the smooth, silky notes of "Tell Me (Do You Still Love Jesus)." The sparse instrumentation and Jonathan's deeply moving vocals plead for an answer on this introspective cut.
Brand New Day
is a wonderful expression of the faith that has helped Butler get through the many long and dark points in his life. Reflects Butler, "It's amazing to look back on my life, at the way it has unfolded. The hardships, the set-backs, the triumphs, all of it. It makes me grateful...grateful for my life as it is now, but also grateful for the journey. For being given these extraordinary life experiences. For making everyday, for me, a brand new day."

William Murphy, III, known for the smash hit "Praise Is What I Do"-the title track from Shekinah Glory Ministries' 2002 gold-selling album-just released a new CD, THE SOUND. "This album has the kind of music that will make you roll your windows down and kick back" says Murphy. "It is very progressive." Possessing a voice that is nothing short of stunning in range and dynamics, and with seasoned hit-makers, William makes music that crosses all lines of age, creed and color. THE SOUND features three generations of William Murphy's as his father and grandfather contribute to 'the sound'. Recorded live before an audience at Crossover Studio in Atlanta, GA and filled with a few friends and members of the Dream Center Church where Murphy is Pastor, this was designed to be more of an intimate setting. According to Murphy, people are getting more than just good songs. They are really getting a worship experience. The greatest inspiration came as Murphy was going through personal trials all the way back to December 2004 and people were sending him emails testifying of their worst time in their lives. As he spoke to the Lord, he was reminded to not panic because there was a new sound that needed to be heard and delivered. So he used the struggles of his life to produce a new sound - birthing a song. The soon-to-be classic "The Sound," the album's first single and video, gets its inspiration because the Lord spoke to William and told him that there was a new sound that he was waiting to hear as reminiscent of the sound from Jericho. He wants this new sound to "break my people through." In other words, it is the sound of Jubilee or to set the people free. Other songs include "Happy Days" a duo with his friend, Grammy-Award nominated Canton 'C.J.' Jones, "Angels Cry," written by his younger brother, and a re-write of Fred Hammond's anthem "Blessed." William was born and raised in Detroit, where he lived until his late 20s, before moving to Atlanta in 2001 to serve as Senior Minister of Worship at Bishop Eddie Long's renowned New Birth Missionary Baptist Church until 2005. He and his wife, Pastor Danielle Murphy lead the Dream Center Church of Atlanta.
-Critically acclaimed, chart-topping Contemporary Christan artist Katie Giguere is in the studio this week, putting the finishing touches on her next single. The song, called "Anyway," was co-written and recorded by award-winning country artist Martina McBride, and recently hit the top of both the Country and AC charts on mainstream radio. It is one of McBride's fastest rising singles of her career. Giguere, best known for her Top 10 single "I Lift Up My Eyes," her Top 25 song "Just By Your Mercy," and her book,
Being the Fat Girl
, recalls the moment she first heard Martina McBride's inspiring hit song. "I was driving in my car, and 'Anyway' came on the radio," says Giguere. "I had never heard it before, and wasn't sure if it was old new, or even who the artist was at first. One particular lyric really caught my attention.
'You can chase a dream that seems so out of reach, and you know it might not ever come your way, dream it anyway.'
I immediately got goose bumps because that has been a motto for my life and the focus of my ministry since I was 15. As a young overweight teen, my dream of becoming a recording artist seemed completely out of reach, but a wonderful woman named Bonita Mitchell told me that nothing is impossible with God, so I should 'dream it anyway.' I've never heard a song that tied in so closely with my message of pursuing your true calling, no matter how unlikely a candidate you may think you are. This song is right on the mark, and it's a beautiful reminder of God's sovereignty and love for us. I am honored to be able to sing it." "Anyway" is being produced by award-winning Nashville writer/producer Jeremy Bose. Bose has worked with some CCM heavyweights, including Rebecca St. James, Cindy Morgan, Nichole Nordeman, and many others. Since Katie's buzz-generating debut in 2004, she has released seven songs to Christian radio, including three Christmas singles, and "I'll Find You," her self-penned single that broke records for listener response at WSGL in Rockford, IL. Giguere's version of "Anyway" will release to Christian AC and Inspo radio this spring. Her current CD, "I Lift Up My Eyes," is released through Martingale Music, LLC Brentwood, TN, and distributed by New Day Christian Distributors in Hendersonville, TN. It is also available on-line at all major digital distributors, and at

-Former Newsboy Phil Joel encourages children, and parents, to add a little rock & roll to their Bible time with the deliberateKids album, in stores May 1st. On the heels of last year's compelling the deliberatePeople album, Phil's first children's project begins a new chapter in the deliberatePeople movement. He comments, "For the past six years, my wife Heather and I have been involved in children's ministry at our church. Kids are such little sponges, which is a great thing, provided we can surround them with the right content to soak up. As a parent, I'm looking for Bible-based tools to help raise my kids in a world where there is an aggressive media assault directed at our children. My hope is that this CD will be one of those tools. Most of the CD's songs were written and used to reinforce our Sunday school teaching. We decided to record the songs so that the kids could listen to them in the car or at home. But once we got the songs into the studio, they transformed into little energetic rock songs. The whole idea is to plant seeds of truth into the hearts of our kids while they are young through music that will be enjoyed by kids and parents alike."

The first new full-length studio album in two years, Remedy, is slated to release this fall. There are video clips and blogs featured at www.remedyiscoming.com, where unprecedented early hints of what is to come on the highly anticipated new album can be seen and heard.
-Combining his passion for God with a candid and sincere vision, 7 Spin Music's new hip-hop artist Heath McNease released his debut album The Heath McNease Fanclub Meets Tonight on April 24th. The former theatre major turned hip-hop artist incorporates his love for various styles of music by fusing his acoustic guitar and vocals into his songs. He uses his ability to play guitar while rapping as a way to unite people with different musical tastes. McNease incorporates elements of boom bap, dirty south, blues, jazz, reggae, and rock into his eccentric yet poignant sound. Mixing this all together has quickly garnered McNease a reputation for having one of the quirkiest and most insanely enjoyable live shows out there.
-Tim Hughes just released his first album in three years, Holding Nothing Back, April 3rd. Following the success of his sophomore album, When Silence Falls, the new album from Hughes encourages listeners to take worship further than Sunday morning by freely worshipping Christ in every thought, action and aspect of daily life. The new album features the current single, "Happy Day," as well as "Everything," a song that reminds us to put God at the center of life, and celebrate His amazing love for us every moment. Currently the Director of Worship at Holy Trinity Brompton, London, Tim also heads up Worship Central, a new school of worship to train and equip worship leaders, musicians and worshippers.
