Blog Entry 91 of 105 Places To Go, People to See
A new blog from the Buffalo born author of the novel, 'Traveling With An Eggplant', that deals with her work, book tour, and ridiculous midadventures, as well as descriptions of Clarence bars, restaurants, businesses, parks, etc so that people know more about her hometown and get a humorous look at what's featured in Clarence and what being there is really like so that they want to make an effort to check it out. People actually living in Buffalo have zero excuse for not going anyways but hopefully the blog will give them that extra push. For more info, there's always the official site: www.alyciaripley.com where you can read all about the lively, eccentric brunette and what she's currently up to. In addition to promoting "Eggplant," her new book 'Try Anything Once' should hit stores in late summer '07 followed by a novel called 'Winterphoenix' shortly thereafter. She is also an obsessive copyeditor, the co-editor of an anthology book of works by Buffalo born writers along with notorious Buffalo man about town essayist, Tom Waters as well as being a commentator for this just-born site. She has performed in many NYC stage productions and has an upcoming extended stay in Los Angeles to further her film work. Her nomadic life has helped her to appreciate what Buffalo and in particular, Clarence, NY has to offer, so get there already and see what all the fuss is about.

New, great opportunity
Contributed by: Alycia Ripley   on 5/17/2008

I actually have some good news. No, its not a job unfortunately, but it may lead to one. i was researching acting schools in the Santa Monica area because so many people suggested that althoughI have already studied at Strasberg, it would behoove me to take classes because it's great for networking and learning but also- agents and managers often scout them for new talent which is EXACTLY whatI need. So I was researching them and it was on a day thatI was really down- couldnt get in touch with ppl, find the right job, etc. There are some of you out there that know EXACTLY the feeling I'm talking about.I knew it would be a good idea and somehow, randomly came across this page of Joanne Baron, an acting coach who currently works with ppl like halle berry= chk out the site www.baronbrown.com . It sounded like the perfect fit for me and on top of that, its walking distance to my house! Unfortunately, its not cheap-I called and the six week intensive class cost $770 or something like that. Asking my parents for more money for more school is the opposite of what i wanted to do-I wanted to become more independent. However, thats not to be this year,It looks like this year is the final stretch in trying to achieve something and needing their help. I askedmy stepdad to look at the site with my mother and to tell me if they thought it would be worth doing. He spoke to me on the phone today and said i should absolutely call and schedule my interview and that they wanted me to take the class for all the reasons i liked it- getting me back in the game (being here, calling about random jobs is certainly not doing that) and learning new things but most importantly- being taught by ppl who REGULARLY work with actors, learn of auditions, help introduce you to agents and managers, have celeb guest speakers, etc. I'll only do the 6 week class most likely, it starts when i get back from buffalo. im really excited about this opportunity- not only will it have me doing something i really enjoy, its a great networking opportunity and can move me forward and getting me around ppl that im certainly not around now.I really feel i was meant to come across this site, esp because i lucked out that not only is it great- its walking distance! so im really happy about this program. and i look at it this way- i know a girl who worked NINE DAYS last year and made $85,000. i am not making this up. imagine how much she would have made had she made more than ONE commercial! If i get one commercialI can give my parents the money BACK for the class and have made money for myself. My parents have never made me feel beholden for their paying for school- education means something to them and the fact that this education can help me get to where im going was a non-decision. Im going sunday (tomorrow) to see a book signing by William Esper that this school invited me to- and ill get to meet the people that work there before my interview the next day!

I'm just been trying to stay focused and do what i can to move this career along-I'm so thankful for my parents help because the more I read about ppl trying to enter this industry, the more clear it is that when ppl are successful, there was someone behind them, a parent, spouse, etc that helped support them because everything you HAVE to do to get into it costs money- living in LA, headshots, car, acting classes, etc. I just really appreciate my parents helping me to accomplish this dream- they were behind me in the hardship of getting my book published and now I have a new one coming out and they're behind me on this too. No matter what happens, I know and felt I had a lot to contribute to film and storytelling and the acting out of characters and I'll know that I did everything I could to involve myself with the industry- I'm also in touch with a well-known editor and am interested in that angle as well, coming attractions, trailers, etc. I'd really appreciate it if any friends or readers out there that have liked my work would say a prayer for me that I can really accomplish some more goals this year!!
