I was beyond excited when I heard this comment..how oftendo you really hear things said about you, esp when they have a great twist? The other day an editor of mine wasdiscussing an upcoming book festival with the festival publicist and mentioned they should have me come and speak. When the publicist asked her to describe me, the editor said, "Oh, articulate, funny, lots of charisma, a real sparkle in her eye, a knack for getting in funny situations. I've always called her the female Marty Mc Fly." Now, this statement is cool for a variety of reasons 1) being that I absolutely love 'Back To The Future' and Michael J. fox insanely so. I don't think I could ever call someone else 'dreamy' but him and isn't it so funny- he was too charismatic tobe cute, too cute to be hot so somehow dreamy just fit him in the 80s? 2) It's just a cool reference andI was honored to be part of a cool reference, esp that of a cool 80s reference specifically, and 3) I had just come back ironically (although she didnt know this at the time) from a special BTTF double feature at the Aero Theatre here in Santa Monica. The night before my friend James took me to see a double feature of 'Caddyshack' and then 'Groundhog Day' at this Aero theatre and I was completely transfixed by this place that was only a short walk (well, in the opinion of an ex-Manhattanite, not in the opinion of a Californian) from my apt and played movies, most of which were from my childhood or before and often had people involved in those very movies to discuss them and answer questions! THIS IS WHAT BEING IN LOS ANGELES IS ALL ABOUT- this is the types of things they have that other places don't!! This is one of the reasons I'm here!!! Film geek central. So I notice the BTTF showing the next night and decide I have to go although I'll be alone for that one because James was going out of town and plus I couldn't ask him to drive all the way from Silverlake two nights in a row. And I couldn't miss this because Dean Cundey the cinematographer and Rick Carter the set designer were coming and giving a talk and I love those guys! Film geek sighting here if you didn't see it coming! so I go to it and it was a magical experience (don't make fun of me b/c I'm not buying it- I KNOW how many insane BTTF fans there are- there's websites dedicated to it!!) and I sat there just imagining I was back in 1985 and remembering how I felt when I first saw that movie at a theatre in Buffalo and was confused by the phrase Back To The Future and how that was possible and how much I not only wanted to go out with MJFox (some things never change) but to be like Marty Mc Fly because I related to him so much that I thought something was wrong! I said to my mom at one point (I think she took me to see it the 2nd time) 'He's just like me!' but of course you wouldn't look at a 7 yr old girl and think she was like M Mc Fly, I mean, come on. But I wasn't completely wrong because years later that comparison came up a lot and it's not even like I was wearing Nike Airs or a puffy vest at the time (although I'ma good skateboarder with a penchant for doing it while holding on to the back of people's cars). And it's a comparison I'm proud of- I don't know who most young girls want to be compared to but from the ones I've heard, they're cheesy and I like the one I got! The night was fantastic- hearing those guys speak about the experience and one that I wish I could have been part of as an actor and one that had such an effect on my childhood (particularly the fact that 1985 was the most badass year ever in pop culture) was worth every dollar of that ten dollars. It's the type of movie that just isn't going to be made anymore and if it is, it's rare. Even the film stock back then was so different and in my opinion, so much better. No matter. It was just such a great experience to be part of and there's so much audience participation there: whenever the names of everyones favorite actors come up, people start cheering and yelling andI couldn't stop laughing when this happened, partly because it was great to be around so many fellow geeks and people who geek out on BTTF are the best type of geeks. They're the people who know what it was like to wish you had a best friend like Doc Brown, a penchant for adventures, a cool boyfriend/girlfriend like Marty or Jennifer, the desire to live in Lyon Estates, the 80s version, with those little cul-de-sac houses, to go to Hill Valley High, to mess around in time with that DeLorean and most importantly- to have a kicking Huey Lewis soundtrack playing whenever you made a move. So given the fact that I had just gone to this double feature and was beaming with nostalgia and to hear that this editor described me as a female Ms Mc Fly (whether the publicist understood why or not was of no consequence- its not like she knew my mouth crinkles up when I smile, or that I have a pride problem in having to prove myself to people not that I've ever been called 'chicken', a way of widening my eyes when I say something of importance, or just a wiseass sense of humor) just hearing that name made her smile and say "Really?" and ask me to be part of the book festival which was the 2nd thing to completely makemy weekend. Any minute now I'm just waiting for a Biff-type to knock on my forehead with his knuckles...but still that line is just too classic and has to be repeated here. "Forget about the car insurance Mc Fly, who's gonna pick pay my dry cleaning bill, ok who's gonna pay for my suit, I got beer spilled on it when the car hit me..who's gonna pay for that, thats what I wanna know..." :>
