Blog Entry 13 of 105 Places To Go, People to See
A new blog from the Buffalo born author of the novel, 'Traveling With An Eggplant', that deals with her work, book tour, and ridiculous midadventures, as well as descriptions of Clarence bars, restaurants, businesses, parks, etc so that people know more about her hometown and get a humorous look at what's featured in Clarence and what being there is really like so that they want to make an effort to check it out. People actually living in Buffalo have zero excuse for not going anyways but hopefully the blog will give them that extra push. For more info, there's always the official site: www.alyciaripley.com where you can read all about the lively, eccentric brunette and what she's currently up to. In addition to promoting "Eggplant," her new book 'Try Anything Once' should hit stores in late summer '07 followed by a novel called 'Winterphoenix' shortly thereafter. She is also an obsessive copyeditor, the co-editor of an anthology book of works by Buffalo born writers along with notorious Buffalo man about town essayist, Tom Waters as well as being a commentator for this just-born site. She has performed in many NYC stage productions and has an upcoming extended stay in Los Angeles to further her film work. Her nomadic life has helped her to appreciate what Buffalo and in particular, Clarence, NY has to offer, so get there already and see what all the fuss is about.

I love you, Rocky Balboa

And for what I've been waiting days to write about- ROCKY BALBOA!

As much as a geeky cinemaphile and actor as I am, I can't stand writing reviews and it's probably because it's all I talk about so the idea of writing it all down is sort of tiring and repetitive for me and everyone I know. But I have to do it for this movie because it's THAT good. I want everyone to go and support this film. You'll love it. I knew it would be good but I had no idea it would be excellent. I LOVE Sylvester Stallone. Chris and I were watching this movie with dropped jaws. The acting was amazing from everyone- Stallone's monologues were great- he just hit them all out of the park. And all those people who like to make fun of Rocky for being this good hearted but not always articulate guy- boy am I ready to prove YOU wrong. His monologues (there were four or five classic ones) were so good that I'm going to see it multple times at the theatre just for them (and overall support) and I want that DVD to be able to pop in at any time. Everyone was great- the writing was fantastic- there wasn't ONE wasted or extraneous scene or moment. The direction was simple and inspired. The editing was fantastic- the small clips from the first film were used to great effect and goes to show that to make an amazing movie you don't need all multimillion dollar special effects, in fact, it ruins it. Don't get me started on how awesome ET's effects were and they were nothing compared to what they try to do these days. This Rocky was such a great throwback to the original film and the message was so inspiring that I cried literally throughout the entire thing. It's not that it was sad- in fact, anything but, but I just love Rocky so much and want to be like him and was so proud of not only him but Stallone for creating that film and showing people how's it done. DidStallone make some bad career choices over the years? Sure, but sohaseveryone. Even Meryl Sreep has a few on her resume where you're thinking, "How did that happen?" Does he have a crazy mom and brother, Jackie and Frank, respectively, that like to go on ridiculous talk shows and talk about crazy nonsense? Absolutely. But you can't always tell what a movie's going to be by looking at a script (My friend Mika taught me that, who has worked on the behind the scenes of movies such as 'The Matrix' and 'Capote') and Stallone's done some super quality work and this one is definitely his best. Don't get me started on the anti-Italian American prejudice out in Hollywood because we'll be here all day and I'm planning on writing about it this week to bring awareness of it to the forefront because I'm SICK AND TIRED OF IT. (Pacino, Coppola, DeNiro, Sofia Coppola, Leo, Sly, and of course Martin Scorsese have all been so prejudiced against that it's sickening- when you see the examples I can spell out, you'll just simply gasp at the very gall of it) I''d like to get out there and show the Jewish businessmen who feel they're the backbone of the movie industry and all their UberWasp puppets from here and over seas just what we can do....But for now- you can give them all a slap in the face by seeing 'Rocky Balboa 'and giving a metaphoric thumbs up to one of our most underhyped, underappreciated talents- the 60 year old Stallone who looks great and created an iconic character so strong and so loved that the homage to him from the fans over the end credits is heartbreaking and wonderful. It's a touching movie without mawkish, oversentimentality and a strong sense of courage, self-respect and a very positive view of aging. Rocky's comment about having 'too many birthdays' is touching and poignant no matter what age you are. Just go and see it.
