Blog Entry 1 of 7 Living in Amherst: One Woman's Guide
Stop by often for updates on fun (hopefully inexpensive!) activities in the Amherst area. In addition to offering ideas for thigns to do, I will review events that I have attended myself. As I am a freelance writer at home with my three children, I will try to include as many family-friendly activities as I can.

Holiday Spirit Begins at Home
Contributed by: Michele Johnson   on 12/4/2006

As we approach the holidays, many families are shopping and wrapping and worshipping and so many other things that they are forgetting to do things as a family. Or, maybe even worse, the only family activities that are happening are the parties that are squeezed into an already full schedule. (I personally have five things scheduled for my family on Saturday!) Then, as our children become tired and crabby, we get angry with them for losing their tempers. This year, I am making some changes to my holiday schedule:

1. I am teaching my two older children (ages 6 and 4) about the spirit of giving. Our church (Zion Lutheran) has an Angel Tree where tags are hung with first names and ages of people in our community who will most likely not receive Christmas gifts this year. My children will pick out and help pay for one gift each to be given to someone in need.

I know that we all hear about opportunities to give, but how many of us do it? By teaching our children now that the holidays are about more than receiving, they will grow up to be more compassionate adults. Check out your place of worship or local mall for organizations like the Angel Tree.

2. I am weeding out our holiday schedule. Too many times I have allowed my kids to stay out late only to regret it on Monday morning when school time comes again. While having fun is important as we socialize with friends and family, I need to keep my kids well-being in mind. Instead of committing to parties all weekend long, I will try to spread our socializing out all year round to make more time at home with my kids and our own holiday traditions.

3. I will allow my kids to be involved with the wrapping and baking. I want my kids to have the experience of Christmas, which includes the messier parts! Fond memories are created by doing things together as a family. Kids like to be involved and I will allow them to be...even if it means that the gifts won't look exactly perfect!

I am sure there are more things that I can come up with to make this holiday time even more special. But, I do believe that with this start, our holiday spirit will be alive and that my kids will remember more than their gifts!

Right on, Michele! I applaud your idea to let the kids pitch in and wrap the gifts and ice the cookies! When mine were babes, I could have stood to be a little less perfectionistic and a little more fun! Great suggestions! Nancy Eckerson
