50 is nifty, reflections on life
Random thoughts about living to 50, spending most of it in Buffalo, leaving several times and always coming back. Some political observations and my perpetual peeve about what happened to the people in the process of politics... Changing life from kids moving on, up, out and the joy of getting remarried at an age where you have the wisdom to appreciate a fine man and the circumspection to know when to be quiet. :-) It's amazing how your body begins to betray you but your mind has more acumen and alacrity. It becomes a fascinating dichotomy

I am sick of it! Those hazardous, selfish, hurried jerks who believe that running a red light is of no consequence. Their behavior is accelerating (no pun intended) despite safety precautions built into the system to sloooow them down. Most lights now have a red on all four sides simultaneously just to help with accident avoidence. Still they blast through...2 sometimes 3 cars after the light is long red.
The intersection of Sheridan and North Forest is notorious for this. I have counted as many as 5, FIVE people continuing thru a light that has been red on their side for a number of seconds. This behavior is abhorant. An accident resulting from red light running is100% preventable. And yet on they go...blythly disobeying the V&T laws, thumbing their noses at other motorists, so self -absorbed they have become obnoxious and dangerous.
It is a difficult situation for the police. In order to ticket someone, they have to stop the violator right after a usually busy intersection. It is risky to the officer. Red light cameras would be a big help but no, the "Nanny State" who wants to regulate our transfat intake, says its a violation of our privacy to install cameras. So let's see...you can stick your nose into my french fries but when it comes to protecting me from someone else's thoughtless, illegal behavior you bow out! Way to protect the citizenry...
And speaking of red light cameras...oh yeah, that big money pit that takes so many upstate taxes-- now they have cameras! NYC has used these effectively for years. We need a home rule request to get them. We tried years ago for a pilot project. Colorado Springs, DC and Sacremento among many others have used these efeectively for years and their citizens are not haunted by feelings of big brother.
There are multiple systems to choose from including ones that transmit pictures of the violators tags (so they can at least be penalized for their nonsense) to systems so sensitive, by the trajectory of their cameras they know who is going to barrel through and they hold up the traffic on the side that should turn green. Alas, alack we have none of this technology and as a result we have daily violators and people hurt needlessly.
So what can we do? HONK 'EM OUT!!!!!!! When you see someone about to breeze through a red light, lay on your horn. When you see the 4th car turn from the left lane despite the fact that the arrow has been gone for 5 seconds, HONK' EM OUT!
Call attention to their bad behavior with the only weapon we have...our horn! If two or three people blast their horns at an individual about to commence this heinous little practice, hopefully they will think twice the next time so as not to be publically pointed at or collectively embarrassed. There is a benefit in doing this as well. It serves as a warning to those daydreaming people with one foot on the brake and one on the gas whose intention it is to leap through the intersection the nanosecond the light turns green. The pervasive honking noise will hopefully cause them to scope the intersection before proceeding. If nothing else, you'll feel less like a victim!

While I understand COMPLETELY your feelings about the necessity to stop red light runners, I would hope that honking is not the answer. I do believe that increased police presence or a simple camera would do the trick. As someone who lives near that crossing, I'd hate to have noise pollution take over our evenings.
