Blog Entry 1 of 2 Tips for Car Buyers
Welcome to my "Tips for Car Buyers" blog. Among my experiences in life, 7 years of Automobile Sales were amongst some of the most interesting and challenging. I have met every type of person and personality imaginable while selling cars, but I learned to listen twice as much as I talked. No longer in "the car business", I do have some wisdom to share and pass onto you. From a new salesperson learning the ropes in Charlotte NC to running an entire Internet Sales Division at a major WNY dealership, I hope you will be able to take just one thing from this blog: Keep your sense of humor!

So easy, a Caveman can buy one!

So you want to buy a car, then let's start at the beginning of time! We can go back perhaps 10's of thousands of years, maybe longer to find the source of modern transportation's inception. It was in my opinion back when Cavemen discovered the "wheel" that the movement of people and stuff radically changed. It was a paradigm shift of monumental proportions. I can't prove it, but I bet wheels were bought and sold and traded. I can just picture some hairy Caveman pitching his "stone" wheel to passer buys driving a hard bargain for this new technology. Other cavemen probably thought this idea wouldn't work so they passed up the opportunity.

Fast forward history, and some people claim the Pyramids of Giza were built 6,000 years ago. This number is debated but back then "logs", or very wide wheels were used to move massive stones. These items were also bought and sold. Before that time one wheel was connected to a shaft and another wheel, improving the transportation for humankind and people like Ben Hur the Chariot rider. Well that is probably step 2 in the progressive history of transportation but I am sure Chariots or 2 wheeled buggies we're created long before the days of Ben Hur. It was either pulled or pushed by cavemen, maybe more modern humans, and animals to haul stuff and people.

Eventually 2 whole wheel shaft sets were connected and the 4 wheel cart was created. I'm sure those were the good ole days, a very long time ago. But it wasn't for 1,000's more years that things came into the industrial age and the single wheel morphed by time and mans intelligence and drive for adaptation and change. The first recorded steam-powered device, the aeolipile, was described by Hero of Alexandria (Heron) in 1st century Roman Egypt. The first practical Steam Turbine was invented in the 16 century Ottoman days. Devices called air engines have been recorded from as early as 1699. The Stirling engine was invented and developed by Reverend Dr Robert Stirling and his brother James in 1816. The inventors sought to create a safer alternative to the steam engines of the time which often exploded. Then in 1832 the first real Electric Motor was created by British Scientist William Sturgeon.

However it wasn't until 1876 that the worlds first effective 4 stroke gasoline engine was invented by Nicholas Otto a happy-go-lucky traveling salesman from Western Germany who only looking to make enough money to marry his sweetheart Ann. Yet the idea and potential for this gas engine and what could become of it, consumed Nicholas to no end. Note how Otto" sounds just like "Auto", hence the otto-mobile. As time would unfold, the engine was mated to a cart or chassis and the modern vehicle was created.

Along the same time line from the beginning to the cavemen days, machinery and transportation devices were invented and improvised in the areas of agricultural equipment, marine and land transport such as trains and then to air. All along the way, from raw materials and human labor to an end product, these items were bought, sold and traded.

This brings us to the hyper age where we live now. In the most recent Business 2.0 magazine, Dean Kamen has planned on putting a Sterling Engine into a small car invented by a new European upstart. Kamen invented the Segway in case you can't remember who he is. The Segway incidentally utilizes a Stirling Engine.

From the Cavemen to present day Fall 2007, some things have changed, but if a Caveman could by a set of wheels, so can you.
