Blog Entry 7 of 7 Ask the Experts
Please allow me to introduce myself as a first time blogger. My name is Gina Nowak and I am the Training Manager at the Lockport Athletic and Fitness Club. Among training several regular clients on a daily basis, I teach Pilates, step aerobic classes and a Swiss Ball toning class. These days health and wellness is a major topic of discussion. With this being said, many people are on the quest to lose weight and feel better. This does not only pertain to the way they people look, but also how they feel about themselves. With no surprise, the determined and dedicated few are the ones that are successful at making this change. It is a rewarding process for the client and myself to see their hard work show openly in the way they look, feel, and present themselves to others. They posess the walk of a proud person and believe me when I tell you that achieving this goal is absolutely possible. There is no better time to start than right NOW! What is it going to take to start digging yourself out of the trenches to feeling better? This blog is going to help answer your questions specific to health related topics. Please feel free to submit your questions to gina@lockportathletic.com.

False Positive
Contributed by: Gina Nowak   on 6/17/2007

Question:

I was working out for the last year at a regular three to four times a week. I have been weight traing and doing cardiovascular exercises. I have lost 20 lbs and dropped 12% of my body fat! I felt strong, energetic and fit. In the last two months my job has monopolized much of my time and I am unable to keep up my routine. One thing I have noticed is that my weight has not drastically changed but my clothes are fitting tighter and my energy levels have also decreased. Can I continue to lose weight even though I am not exercising?

Answer:

What you are experiencing is something I hear all too often. When a gym member stops their regular routine, many times they do experience a drop in their weight, which sends a message of a "False Positive". Why do I need to exercise when I'm dropping weight without it?

What is really happening within your body is a loss of muscle mass. Since you stopped your regular routine of weight training, you also lost the muscle on your body which weighs more than fat. The weight you are losing is not fat, but muscle mass. Since muscle mass is directly related to the energy your body produces, this would explain the lack of energy that you are experiencing. You may lose weight and still your clothes may fit tighter because you may have lost the muscle tone that hold you in and firms you up.

Exercise is for much more than looking great. It keeps your body strong! You are not just slim, but fit, strong, energetic and will have a great sence of well being after a good workout that will last the whole day.

At the Lockport Athletic and Fitness Club we offer free body composition testing with our two week free pass. We will asses your body composition and let you know how much muscle and fat you have on your body. We will also show you what you need to do to get to your ideal weight..
